Sam Nussbaum

Of Blessed Memory 1920 – 2002

Sam Nussbaum was born in Przemyśl , Poland in 1920. In 1941 the city was occupied and a ghetto established. In 1943, Sam and his family were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. He and his father managed to remain together until Sam was sent to another camp to work in a mine. In 1944, as the Soviets moved westward across Poland, he was shipped to Austria: first to Mauthausen; then to Ebensee, where he was liberated by the Americans in 1945. Between 1945 and 1948, he lived in a displaced persons camp in Italy, where he met and married his wife and his son was born. They came to the United States in 1948.
