Can the media incite violence?
This unit aims to address the issue of media and violence, and to explore how the media influenced the Rwandan Genocide and The Holocaust. Using primary resources, transcripts and propaganda terminology, the learners will:
- Understand the different types of propaganda, bias and stereotype
- Learn about and discuss theories about the effect media has on people
- Study the causes and effects of the Rwandan Genocide
- Examine the effect print media had on the Rwandan Genocide and the Holocaust
- Analyze the effect radio had on the Rwandan Genocide and the Holocaust
- Research the aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide and the Holocaust and discuss culpability and the law.
This unit is intended to be integrated into Holocaust studies and therefore assumes students know at least the basics about The Holocaust. If you would like to use it as an independent unit, not having studied the Holocaust, you will need to add in a lesson after the lesson about Rwanda, giving students the basic information about the Holocaust.
