Adela Kraus grew up in Nyírbátor, Hungary with her 6 brothers and 3 sisters. In 1944, when the Nazis invaded Hungary, Adela was 16 years old. Her family was briefly sent to a ghetto before being deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. She and her sister Rose survived. After her liberation, Adela returned to Hungary where she met and married her husband Jack. The couple immigrated to the United States in 1949, settling in Kansas City.
