Reggie Goldberg

Of Blessed Memory 1926 – 2008

Reggie Ohringer was born in 1926 in Cottbus, Germany. The youngest of six siblings in a religious family, Reggie was the only sibling to attend public school as inflation had consumed what little wealth their parents, Jacob and Miriam Ohringer, had managed to accumulate. Reggie had many non-Jewish friends and even celebrated Christmas with her neighbors. In October 1938 Reggie was pulled from her classroom and taken to the local jail where she found her family. As a Polish national, her father and his family was being deported from Germany. The family lived briefly in Warsaw until Reggie’s brothers secured passage for them to Cuba on a French ship, the Flandre. The ship was turned back to Europe and the Ohringers sought refuge in occupied France. They eventually made their way into Vichy France and were able to immigrate to the United States through Portugal. In the United States Reggie was reunited with her immediate family. She met and married her husband, Wesley Goldberg, some years later and the couple had five children.
