
Yakov Izrailev was born in 1937 in Gomel, Belarus. His father was away serving in the military when the Nazis invaded in 1941. At that time he and the rest of his family evacuated to the village of Neyvo-Rudyanka, where they stayed with a woman and her young son until they were able to return to Gomel in 1944.
