On June 22, 1941 German forces invaded the Soviet Union. Following behind the Wehrmacht troops were mobile killing units known as Einsatzgruppen. These groups were charged with identifying and killing the Jews they encountered in the newly conquered territory. Over 1.5 million Jews were murdered and thousands more fled deep into Soviet territory.
With very few survivors to provide testimony, recent scholarship has focused on local non-Jews who witnessed these atrocities. Many were young children living under occupation when these events occurred. This program explores what we can learn from their testimonies.
