Free Concert for Students
April 28, 2016
10:00 – 11:00 am
Jewish Community Campus
5801 West 115th St.
Overland Park, Kansas
This free concert for students in grades 7 and up is presented by Kansas City Symphony Concertmaster Noah Geller and his group, Shir Ami. They will perform pieces of classical and folk music by Jewish composers whose lives and careers were affected by the first half of the tumultuous 20th century – notably the Holocaust. In addition to the performance, Geller will introduce the pieces and explain the social and cultural circumstances in which they were created, adding an educational component to the enjoyment of the concert.
The concert will feature the music of Mieczyslaw Weinberg, a Polish Jew who fled Nazi-occupied Europe for the Soviet Union, composers of the so-called St. Petersburg School, and traditional Yiddish music.
Shir Ami is a quintet which features professional musicians from around the world who play violin, viola, cello, piano, and accordion.
School groups who wish to register for this experience must be chaperoned by 1 adult per 15 students. Your registration will be confirmed on a space available basis. Please email Jessica Rockhold, MCHE’s Director of Education, with questions.
