Abe Flekier

Of Blessed Memory 1929 – 2002

Abe Flekier grew up in Bialobrzegi, Poland, the third of five sons born to Chaya and Eziel Flekier. “Nobody but my mother believed what was coming, ” Abe recalls. “She made little knapsacks for the whole family and filled them with things to keep you alive, like sugar cubes.” After Abe was picked up by the Nazis on the streets of the Bialobrzegi ghetto and sent to forced labor, his family was deported to the Treblinka death camp where they were murdered. During his time in forced labor Abe worked in ammunition factories near Radom, passed through Auschwitz for selection, worked in the quarries at Stuttgart and was eventually liberated outside of Dachau. He emigrated to the United States in 1947 as the sole survivor of his immediate family.
