Abraham Kopec
Abraham Kopec was born in 1933 in Govorovo (Goworowo), Poland. He was 5 years old in 1939 when the Germans invaded Poland and took over his town. The town was burned to the ground and the Jewish occupants lined up to be shot when a Nazi commander intervened to stop the shooting and disperse the Jews into the surrounding fields. Abe’s family fled to Soviet-occupied Poland. In June 1940, his family was deported by the Soviets to Siberia where Abe’s mother died. He and his younger sister were sent to an orphanage, where they remained until 1946, when he was reunited with his uncle. The family made their way back to western Europe and immigrated to the United States in 1950.
