Chana Sander

Of Blessed Memory 1924 – 2001

Chana Waintraub was born in 1924 in Dąbrowa Górnicza, Poland. In February 1940, she was taken to forced labor at Grünberg in Schlesien, where she spent the next four years laboring in a factory and living under increasingly difficult conditions. At the end of 1944, Chana was taken on a death march, ending up in Bergen-Belsen. When the British army liberated the camp Chana was so ill with typhus that she was unaware it had happened. After her recovery she found her cousin, Abe Sander, whom she later married. After a trip back to Poland to look for survivors, she and Abe settled in Zeilsheim Displaced Persons Camp until they could immigrate to the United States in 1949.
