Generations Initiative

The Generations of Memory Initiative recognizes the unique and essential role that descendants of Holocaust survivors play in Holocaust history. As the memory of the Holocaust transitions from lived experience to historical record, the voices of the Second Generation and Third Generation offer vital insight into how trauma, resilience, and memory are transmitted across generations.

While the Holocaust ended in 1945, its impact did not. Each child of a survivor carries a deeply personal story—shaped by their birth order, place of birth, era of upbringing, and the extent to which their parents’ trauma influenced their lives. As MCHE continues to engage the second and third generation in the transmission of memory, we offer the following opportunities to participate in upcoming programs.

This project seeks to, for the first time, record the testimony of children of survivors in telling their own story to preserve their testimony, adding to the depth of our understanding about their childhoods in survivor families, the impact of growing up during the Baby Boom and the dynamic years of social change that followed, and their reflections, now as older adults, on these unique experiences and the markers of their lives.

This writing opportunity is open to any adult child, grandchild, or great grandchild of a survivor who is interested in joining a writing community to explore their memories. A group of the Second Generation will meet separately from the Third and Fourth. Writing will be managed in a facilitated group with writing prompts, workshopping, and the option to submit pieces for a published collection.

Each year at Yom Hashoah we sing Zog Nit Keynmol – the song adopted by the partisans and universally acknowledged as a song of resistance. We invite the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of survivors to join us in creating a very special tribute to survivors by learning both the history and the song and performing it at Yom Hashoah along with cantorial support and the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy Choir. Complete information available by clicking the button above.

In the spirit of your grandparents—who came together with hope and determination to rebuild family and community after the war—we invite you to gather to build community and connection for the future. Just as they once created spaces for joy, conversation, and care, MCHE is creating new social opportunities for their grandchildren to meet, share experiences, and help shape what comes next. Follow this page and watch your email for ways to connect and carry their legacy forward.

Generous support for MCHE’s Generations Initiative was provided by the White Family Supporting Foundation at the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City.
