Tom Stoppard’s acclaimed final play chronicles the life of the Jewish community in Vienna from 1899 to 1955, a community that was devastated during the Holocaust. The play will be performed at The White Theatre in Spring 2027. As part of MCHE’s ongoing educational support around the play’s Spring premiere, the public is invited to read the play and to join us in conversation on March 4, 2027. The discussion will be led by MCHE’s Dr. Melissa Karp, whose expertise in literature will address literary as well as historical aspects of the play.
One of the most celebrated playwrights of the last century, Stoppard’s works have won Tony and Olivier Awards and are much beloved among theatregoers and readers alike. Though based on a fictional family in Vienna, this play contains reminders of Stoppard’s family’s experiences of multiple exiles during the Holocaust and World War II. Reading and discussing it in anticipation of the play’s performance will facilitate a richer understanding of the history and how theatre communicates particular messages about history, memory, and loss.
