Join Dr. Shelly Cline and Melissa Karp for a discussion centering around the book Milena and Margarete: A Love Story in Ravensbrück.

Gwen Strauss’ book, Milena and Margarete: A Love Story in Ravensbrück tells the moving story of Milena Jesenská and Margarete Buber-Neumann, whose relationship gave them strength during their imprisonment in Ravensbrück. Set against the camp’s brutal conditions, their story also explores the history of lesbian relationships, resistance, and persecution in the camps—and the silence that continued long after the war.

Unlike gay men, who were often specifically targeted through police investigations using Paragraph 175 and labeled with the pink triangle, queer women were more likely to disappear into broader categories of Nazi persecution, making their experiences harder to document and their history less visible today.
